February Garden Tasks

February is a great month to be a gardener even if you live in a climate that has cold weather and possibly snow still on the ground.

I will provide you with all kinds of things to keep you busy enjoying the month of February that will help you to grow a fantastic garden.

February Gardening Tasks

  • To stay informed and learn more about gardening this is a great month to read up on gardening, whether it be new techniques to improve your gardening skills or just general knowledge about gardening.  You can check out my favorite gardening books on this link.
  • If you have not purchased your seeds and starts now is the time to do this, since the pandemic we have seen a huge increase in home gardening, if you wait you may miss out on your favorite varieties.
  • Review your current seed inventory to see what you will need to replace or add to your seed purchases for this year.
  • January and February are the only months to plant bare root crops such as fruit trees, strawberries, and asparagus.
  • Now is the time to get your sweet potato growing indoors to be able to get a crop come Fall.
  • You can also start your cold winter crops either in ground or indoors depending on the zone you live in.
  • Check your seed starting schedule to determine what seeds can be started indoors.
  • This is a great month to put out slug and snail bait and traps to wipe out the population before they start breeding in the warm weather and eating your crops.
  • This is also when you will see the first signs of weeds popping up so now is the time to pull them up to keep them from spreading seeds.
  • February and March is a good time to get your dormant sprays on your fruit trees to keep bugs in check.
  • The last of your pruning is needed before plants start budding out, on such plants as roses, grapes, and blueberries.
  • You can also take cuttings from these plants and trees to start more for your garden or to share with others.

I hope that this list will help you with your February Garden Tasks to keep you busy all month long.
