Best Tomatoes to Grow by Region broken down for you.

Cooler Climates without Humidity

Northwestern and Northeastern states are good examples of the regions for these tomato varieties.

In this area, you have a shorter growing season with temperatures that are usually cooler than areas with a long growing season.  For this reason, you typically want a shorter length of time to maturity.

For small tomatoes you have 2 I would highly recommend.

Sungold 65 days to maturity- This is a cherry size tomato that is a golden color and loaded with flavor.  The plant produces a huge crop of these delicious tomatoes throughout the growing season and right up to the first frost.

Prairie Fire 75 days to maturity-  This is one of the sweetest tomatoes you will find, it is oblong in shape and is red with a golden striping that’s where the name comes from.  It is also one of the juiciest tomatoes you will eat.

For mid-sized tomatoes, there are many to choose from here are a few favorites.

Bloody Butcher 60 days to maturity-  This is a deep red tomato that is about 1-2 inches in diameter and is loaded with flavor and is very juicy.

Early Girl 60 days to maturity-  This is a tomato that has a large crop of 2-inch tomatoes that is light pink to red in color.  It has a good flavor for an early tomato.

For Large Slicing tomatoes

Celebrity 70 days to maturity-  This is a tomato that grows well in both the cooler and warmer dry climates producing a large crop of round pink/red tomatoes that have tons of flavor.

Big Beef 73 days to maturity-  This is a large 3-4 inch tomato that is loaded with flavor and matures early compared to many other large slicers.  It has a truly acidic tomato that produces a large crop.

Pineapple 75-85 days to maturity-  Even though this tomato takes a little longer to reach maturity it is well worth the wait.  I have rated this as a must-grow tomato for its flavor and distinctive orange and red color.

Warm, Dry Climate

In this climate, you have a longer season to grow tomatoes and you can even grow year-round if you have no frost.

This includes areas of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

For small tomatoes, I would recommend you grow the following varieties:

Sungold 65 days to maturity-  This is a cherry size tomato that is a golden color and loaded with flavor.  The plant produces a huge crop of these delicious tomatoes throughout the growing season and right up to the first frost.

Prairie Fire 75 days to maturity-  This is one of the sweetest tomatoes you will find, it is oblong in shape and is red with a golden striping that’s where the name comes from.  It is also one of the juiciest tomatoes you will eat.

For mid-sized tomatoes

Heat Master 65-75 days to maturity-  This tomato is resistant to heat and diseases while producing a tomato hybrid tomato that is full of flavor.

Cherokee Purple 75-80 days to maturity-  This tomato has a longer growth time allowing the flavor and color (purple/reddish) to develop, with a great flavor.

Large Slicer tomatoes

Big Beef 70-75 days to maturity-  This tomato is a hybrid that has won numerous awards and is disease resistant.  The tomato is round in shape and has that true red tomato color and flavor.

Celebrity 70 days to maturity-  This is a tomato that grows well in both the cooler and warmer dry climates producing a large crop of round pink/red tomatoes that have tons of flavor.

Warm/Hot Humid Climates

This climate is more difficult to grow tomatoes in since they are impacted by both the heat and the high humidity.  They are prone to more diseases and blossom drop.

Small tomatoes

Sweet Million 75 days to maturity-  This is one of the largest producing tomatoes you can grow, producing over 500 tomatoes per plant.  They have a deep red color and are loaded with flavor for such a small tomato.

Medium size tomatoes

Heat Master Hybrid 70 days to maturity-  This tomato was developed for the heat of the South so you know it will survive the heat and humidity.  It is a globe-shaped tomato that is good fresh and for use in sauces.  It has good disease resistance and yields a large crop.

Jubilee 80 days to maturity-  This is a golden yellow tomato that produces a large crop of medium globe-shaped tomatoes that are full of flavor and do well in the humid and hot temperatures of the south.

Large Slicer tomatoes

Celebrity 70 days to maturity-  This is a tomato that grows well in both the cooler and warmer dry climates producing a large crop of round pink/red tomatoes that have tons of flavor.

Atkinson 70 days to maturity-  This is a large tomato that reaches 1 lb in size and has a meaty red flesh that was developed in the 60’s to produce large round flavorful tomatoes for growing in hot humid climates.

One of the common themes with one variety that grows well in all the regions of the country is Celebrity, I have grown this tomato for years in the Pacific Northwest and have always had great success both with resistance to disease and producing a huge crop of large flavorful tomatoes.

No matter where you live I would grow the Celebrity Tomato.
